Schedule & What to Expect
Southwest Jr. Livestock Show
The official show schedule can be found on the "Schedule" tab of the show website.
Monday/Tuesday: Slick Shearing
-
All lambs need to be slick sheared for the show. If you have your own clippers, this can also be done on Wednesday. There will be a sign up sheet sent out for those who need help.
Wednesday: Weigh in
-
The Diamond Z opens at 10 AM. You can take your animals there anytime after 10. In the past you could put your name on a stall to reserve it. This year they are not allowing that. You can claim a pen when you put your animals in it.
-
Take your lamb and everything you need (see the packing list) to the Diamond Z Arena.
-
Weigh in your lamb between 3:00 and 5:00 P.M.
-
Feed your lamb as close to its regular schedule as possible and leave it at the arena. (It will stay there the rest of the week. Hotel Diamond Z)
-
6:00 PM There is an optional Fitting Contest. It's a competition where teams of 3 kids slick shear their lamb and fit it for the show.
-
Late in the evening, watch the Southwest Livestock Show Facebook feed and/or website for them to post the classes. Find your child's name(s) to know which class you are in. For example, class 1, class 2, class 3, etc. so that you can be ready.
Thursday: Market Show
-
You need to arrive at the show Thursday morning in time to feed your lambs (and give them time to eat), bath them for the show, let them dry, prep them for their class, and kids to change into show clothes.
-
The market show starts at 10 AM. The classes will be sorted by the lamb's weight. The smallest lambs will be in the first classes....and then continue to the heaviest lambs.
-
5:00 is the Pee Wee show if younger siblings want to participate. (optional)
-
6:00-6:30 Club Potluck Dinner. (Optional) We'll meet at Clint and Jamie Gardner's trailer. Bring camp chairs to sit in and watch for the sign up sheet for the potluck.
-
7:00 is the judging contest where the kids can learn how to judge and place livestock. (optional)
-
Feed lambs their PM feeding before going home. Stick to their usual schedule as close as possible. You are responsible to keep your lamb's pen clean.
Friday: Showmanship Show
-
Your lambs need to be fed Friday morning as close to their same schedule as possible.
-
The showmanship classes will be posted. Find your kid's name on the list so you know what class they are in and plan accordingly so you have time to bath and prepare your lamb.
-
Your lamb will have to be bathed, dried, and prepped for the showmanship portion (just like it was on Thursday.)
-
The Showmanship classes begin at 1:00 PM. They usually start with Seniors, then Intermediates, and Juniors last.
-
Feed lambs their PM feeding as close to their regular schedule as possible before going home.
Saturday: Sale
-
Feed lambs their regular morning feeding.
-
Lambs need to be clean (likely bathed one last time!) and ready to go into the auction arena. Check the auction sheets for where you are in the sale order. Be ready to go into the auction ring many lambs ahead of your turn. The Grand and Reserve lambs take extra time to sell, but then things move fairly quick. DO NOT MISS YOUR TURN!
-
After your lamb sells in the auction, they will tell you where to take it. Leave the lamb in the designated pen.
-
If you have a thank you for the buyer, deliver them to the buyer. (Tip- watch who buys the lamb so you know who it is.) If you don't give the thank you that day, it will need to be delivered/mailed later.
-
Clean up your pen and surrounding area and then you are done! (sigh!)
