Schedule & What to Expect
Dixie Jr. Livestock Show
The official show schedule can be found on the show website.
Monday-Wednesday: Slick Shearing
-
All lambs need to be slick sheared before weigh-in at the show. It is against the rules to do any shearing at the Dixie Jr. Livestock Show. Shearing closer to the show is ideal to allow the lamb to look its best. It is easy to do the day before the show if you are able to shear your own lamb. However, if you need help, sometimes you need to do it earlier for practical reasons and that's ok too. Most DJLS lambs will be shearing Monday-Wednesday of show week.
Thursday: Weigh-in & Showmanship
-
Take your lamb and everything you need (see the packing list) to the Washington County fairgrounds.
-
Weigh your lamb in between 8:00 and 11:00 A.M. Then you can find a stall to use for the duration of the show. Get your lamb water and set up your spot.
-
Find out what class number your child is in so you can gauge when to bath the lamb and get into show clothes.
-
The Showmanship show begins at 1:00 PM. The classes are sorted by grade level. They usually start with Seniors (oldest kids), Intermediates next, and Juniors last. However, double check in case it changes.
-
Feed your animals as close to their regular feeding schedule as possible before you go home after the show.
Friday: Market Show
-
You need to arrive at the show Friday morning in time to feed your lambs (and give them time to eat), bath them for the show, prep them for their class, and kids to change into show clothes.
-
The market show starts at 8 AM. The classes will be sorted by the lamb's weight for the market show. The smallest lambs will be in the first classes....and then continue to the heaviest lambs. Be sure your child is ready 2 classes before their own.
-
Feed lambs their PM feeding before going home. Stick to their usual schedule as close as possible. You are responsible to keep your lamb's pen clean.
-
Go to the dinner and awards banquet at 6 PM.
Saturday: Sale
-
Feed lambs their regular morning feeding.
-
Lambs need to be clean (likely bathed one last time!) and ready to go into the auction arena. Check the auction sheets for where you are in the sale order. Be ready to go into the auction ring many lambs ahead of your turn. The Grand and Reserve lambs take extra time to sell, but then things move fairly quick. DO NOT MISS YOUR TURN!
-
After your lamb sells in the auction, they will tell you where to take it. Leave the lamb in the designated pen.
-
The DJLS show committee will have a table set up for each exhibitor to write a thank-you note to their buyer. Do not skip this step or you will not get your check.
-
If you have an additional thank you for the buyer, deliver it to them. (Tip- watch who buys the lamb so you know who it is.)
-
Clean up your pen and surrounding area and then you are done! (sigh!)
